PlayStation age verification has begun rolling out in the UK and Ireland, with full implementation expected by June. Users will need to verify their age to access certain features on PlayStation.
The verification process includes options such as a facial scan, supplying identification, or using a mobile number, though availability may vary by country or region. An update screen notifies users of the requirement to verify their age to access all features and enhance their experience.
Eurogamer journalist Dom Peppiatt confirmed receiving an age verification prompt, which stated, “Age verification is required to access certain features on PlayStation.” However, not every user has experienced these prompts. One author reported no age-verification notifications while checking their PlayStation 5.
This requirement aligns with compliance efforts associated with the Online Safety Act, which took effect in the UK last summer. Other gaming platforms, including Steam, Xbox, and Discord, have implemented similar age verification measures. Nintendo is also expected to follow suit soon.
The Online Safety Act aims to protect younger individuals from online harm, but its implementation poses potential challenges for game developers. Smaller companies may face particular difficulties adapting to these new requirements, which could impact their operations.
