This article teaches you how to install app updates on your Android device by updating apps that have new versions available or by turning on automatic updates.

Before you start: You need access to the Google Play Store and an internet connection.

How to update apps on your Android device

Follow these simple steps to update your apps through the Google Play Store or set up automatic updates.

  • Open the Google Play Store app.
  • Tap your profile icon. It’s in the upper-right corner of the screen.
  • Tap Manage apps & device. It’s under the “Play Points” section.
  • Tap Update all. It’s under the “Updates Available” header next to a 2×2 grid icon.
  • If no updates are available, the message “All apps up to date” will be displayed.
  • Tap See details if you want to view more information about which apps have updates or to update each app individually.
  • To set automatic updates, tap your profile image again.
  • Tap Settings. It’s near the bottom of the menu next to a gear icon.
  • Tap Network Preferences. This expands the menu.
  • Tap Auto-update apps. A new window with options will appear.
  • Select how to update the apps. Choose an option in the window:
    • Tap Over any network to automatically update using your mobile data connection. This may incur data charges from your mobile carrier.
    • Tap Over Wi-Fi only to allow automatic updates only when connected to a Wi-Fi network.
    • To stop automatic app updates, tap Don’t auto-update apps.
  • Tap OK to save your changes and close the window.

Pro tip: If an updated app acts buggy, you can obtain an APK of the older version to use temporarily.

You can maintain your device’s performance and security by regularly updating apps. This ensures that you benefit from the latest features, bug fixes, and security patches. If you encounter issues with certain apps not updating, remember that some beta apps may not update reliably and often require manual intervention. Regular app updates make your device less vulnerable to security risks and enhance your overall user experience.
