Meta has announced its first significant artificial intelligence model, dubbed Muse Spark, developed by its Meta Superintelligence Labs. Alexandr Wang, who joined Meta in June after a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, oversees the new model’s development.
The introduction of Muse Spark comes as Meta seeks to regain its footing in the competitive AI sector, following lackluster responses to its open-source models earlier this year. CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s strategy has shifted in response to this setback, and the company stated it rebuilt its AI stack from the ground up. “This initial model is small and fast by design, yet capable enough to reason through complex questions in science, math, and health,” Meta noted in a blog post.
On the day of the announcement, Meta’s stock rose 6.5%, reflecting a broader market rally triggered by President Trump’s declaration to suspend military actions against Iran. The generative AI sector is poised for considerable growth, with projections estimating a rise from $22 billion in 2025 to nearly $325 billion by 2033, according to Grand View Research.
Muse Spark will not be positioned as a top-tier model. Instead, Meta is focusing on its efficiency and competitive performance. The company plans to allocate between $115 billion and $135 billion to AI-related capital expenditures in 2026, nearly double last year’s spending. This funding aims to support Meta’s efforts to create smaller models that perform comparably to older larger models while requiring significantly less compute power.
The model will initially be proprietary, with expectations of future open-source versions. Meta’s previous models were part of the Llama family, which employed an open-source approach. The new model will also feature a private API preview for select partners with future plans for broader commercial access.
Muse Spark will drive the digital assistant capabilities in a new standalone Meta AI app, with launches planned across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and the Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses. Users will benefit from various modes within the app, including options for simple questions and more complex tasks like legal document analysis.
Additionally, a new “Contemplating mode” will assist users in tackling intricate inquiries by utilizing multiple AI agents for parallel reasoning. The upcoming Shopping mode will help consumers find clothing and decor by leveraging content from creators on Meta’s platforms.
“Shopping mode draws from the styling inspiration and brand storytelling already happening across our apps,” Meta stated. “This will surface ideas from the creators and communities people already follow.”
