AI companies are emphasizing the importance of skepticism regarding their models’ outputs in their terms of service. Microsoft, currently targeting corporate customers for its Copilot product, has received scrutiny over its warning to users.
The company’s terms of use were last updated on October 24, 2025, stating, “Copilot is for entertainment purposes only.” Microsoft cautioned that the tool can make mistakes and should not be relied upon for important advice, advising users to proceed at their own risk.
A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed plans to revise what they termed “legacy language” in the terms. “As the product has evolved, that language is no longer reflective of how Copilot is used today and will be altered with our next update,” the spokesperson said.
Other AI companies echo similar disclaimers. OpenAI warns users not to depend on their outputs as “the truth,” while xAI cautions that its output should not be regarded as “a sole service of truth or factual information,” according to a report from Tom’s Hardware.
