A hardware leaker known as KeplerL2 has claimed that the upcoming PlayStation 6 will not include a built-in disc drive, according to a post on the NeoGAF forums.

This development may impact gamers who prefer physical game collections. The alleged specification suggests a base model with 1TB of internal SSD storage, matching the capacity of most PS5 models. Typically, new console generations feature improvements in specifications; however, storage capacity for the PlayStation 6 appears to remain the same.

The reported lack of a built-in disc drive stems from a global RAM shortage influenced by AI technology. This shortage could also delay the PlayStation 6’s planned release, which is currently set for late 2027. Some industry observers anticipate that higher storage options could have been introduced were it not for these constraints.

While Sony has offered a no-disc-drive version of the PS5 since its launch in 2020, it also provides a standalone attachable disc drive for users seeking physical media. The absence of a built-in disc drive in the PlayStation 6 could generate dissatisfaction among consumers concerned about the longevity of digital storefronts and the appeal of used games.

If KeplerL2’s information is accurate, the decision to eliminate the disc drive may spark controversy within the gaming community.
