OpenAI has launched a voice-first ChatGPT experience in Apple CarPlay, enabling drivers to interact with the AI chatbot while driving.
iPhone users with CarPlay can access ChatGPT Voice, provided they are running iOS 26.4 or higher. The feature aims to enhance hands-free communication but comes with several limitations.
To use ChatGPT Voice, users must update their iPhones to iOS 26.4, ensure the ChatGPT app is updated, connect to Apple CarPlay, and then open the app to begin a voice conversation. Users can start new chats or continue existing discussions once connected.
The functionality is limited as it does not support navigation tasks. OpenAI’s documentation specifies that the system cannot access maps, vehicle information, or live location services. It also does not control vehicle functions or interact with other applications.
A safety warning from OpenAI advises users to operate the app safely and legally, recommending that the setup be completed before driving.
