Pearl Abyss has apologized for including AI-generated art in its open-world RPG, Crimson Desert. The developer stated it inadvertently left 2D visual props created with “experimental AI generative tools” in the game’s final release.

The use of AI-generated assets in Crimson Desert, launched on March 21, 2026, has prompted player feedback and a disclosure on the game’s Steam page. This issue highlights growing industry scrutiny on artificial intelligence in game development.

Pearl Abyss said on X that “following reports from our community, we have identified that some of these assets were unintentionally included in the final release.” The company plans a “comprehensive audit of all in-game assets” and will replace affected content in future patches.

The company also stated it would review its internal communication processes to ensure greater “transparency and consistency.”

Other developers have faced similar issues. Sandfall Interactive had awards rescinded for using generative AI in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Embark Studios is also replacing AI-generated content in Arc Raiders following player feedback.
