TikTok will not implement end-to-end encryption for direct messages on its platform, the BBC reported.
The company stated this decision aims to enhance user safety by allowing law enforcement and safety teams access to messages when required, differentiating its approach from competitors.
TikTok stated that end-to-end encryption would impede access for police and safety teams seeking to intervene in potentially harmful situations.
The social media entity said its direct messages employ standard encryption, similar to services such as Gmail. Access to these messages is restricted to authorized employees under specific conditions, including valid law enforcement requests or reports of harmful conduct.
End-to-end encryption, which ensures only sender and recipient can view content, is a default feature in applications like Signal, WhatsApp, and Apple’s Messages.
