Building a door is an essential step in securing your structures and keeping hostile mobs out of your buildings in Minecraft.

Before you start: You will need a crafting table and either 6 wooden planks or 6 iron ingots.
Warning: On hard difficulty, zombies can break wooden doors. Additionally, placing pressure plates on the outside of your door will allow mobs to enter.

How to craft and place doors in Minecraft

Follow these steps to craft and secure your base using wooden or iron doors.

  • Craft a wooden door using 6 wooden planks.
    • Obtain wooden planks by placing wood blocks in the crafting menu.
    • Arrange the 6 planks in a 3 high by 2 wide rectangle to create one door.
    • Choose your wood type (oak, spruce, birch, or jungle) to change the door’s appearance.
  • Craft an iron door using 6 iron ingots.
    • Get iron ingots by crafting them from iron blocks or smelting iron ore.
    • Arrange the 6 ingots in the same 3 high by 2 wide shape as the wooden door.
    • Note: Iron doors are stronger and cannot be broken by zombies.
  • Place the door against the side of a block.
    • If you stand on the outside, the door sits on the outside wall.
    • If you stand on the inside, the door sits on the inside wall.
  • Form double doors by placing two doors side by side. They will automatically orient to face each other.
  • Open wooden doors by right-clicking them.
  • Open iron doors using mechanisms.
    • Use a lever, button, or pressure plate connected to a redstone circuit.
    • Place a pressure plate on the inside hinge to trigger the door.
  • Automate entry using pressure plates.
    • Place the plate on the inside only to prevent mobs from triggering it.
    • Use buttons instead of plates for better security against mobs.
Pro tip: Villagers can open wooden doors but not iron doors. If you want to keep villagers (or other players) out of a specific area, use iron doors that require a button or lever to open.

Now that you have basic doors secured, consider upgrading your base’s security. If you are playing on hard difficulty, replacing wooden doors with iron doors is highly recommended to prevent zombies from destroying your entryways.

You can also experiment with redstone circuits. While simple buttons and levers are sufficient for basic iron doors, you might eventually want to build hidden piston doors or automatic sliding doors for more advanced builds. Keep farming iron, as it is a valuable resource for future tools and armor upgrades as well as secure doors.
