Amazon is integrating an AI-powered assistant, named Health AI, into its One Medical primary care application, providing 24/7 personalized health guidance.

The Health AI tool, introduced by Amazon for One Medical, which it acquired in 2023, explains lab results, assists with medication management, and books patient appointments. The company states the AI can “analyze images” but does not specify types. Amazon asserts the tool “complements, but does not replace,” a patient’s healthcare provider. It also can “answer general and complex health questions” while considering unique health histories.

“Health AI recognizes when symptoms, situations, or specific queries require or benefit from human clinical judgment,” states the company’s announcement, without detailing the scope of medical advice the tool can provide.

Regarding data privacy, Amazon affirms adherence to HIPAA-compliant privacy and security practices. The company specifies that user conversations with Health AI are “not automatically added to your medical record.” Amazon also states it does not sell members’ protected health information.

One Medical operates a limited number of physical offices in major US metropolitan areas, focusing predominantly on telehealth services. These services are included in an annual subscription, with a discount provided for Amazon Prime members. This represents Amazon’s continued investment in healthcare, following previous initiatives like same-day prescription deliveries and prescription drug vending machines.

Health AI aligns with the trend of AI companies entering the healthcare sector with AI-powered chatbots. Last year, Google introduced an AI health coach to the Fitbit app. OpenAI announced a dedicated health portal within ChatGPT in January.
