Learn how to tell if your phone is unlocked before switching carriers or giving it away. While you cannot unlock the phone yourself, checking its status is simple and only requires navigating a few settings menus on your iPhone or Android device. A quick call to your carrier can also confirm the status.
How to check if your phone is unlocked
Follow these platform-specific steps to verify the carrier lock status on your smartphone.
Checking on an iPhone
- Open the Settings app (gray cog icon).
- TapGeneral (scroll down if needed).
- TapAbout at the top of the page.
- Locate Carrier Lock near the bottom, beneath your EID number.
- If you see “No SIM restrictions”, the phone is unlocked. Otherwise, it is locked to your carrier.
Checking on an Android phone
- Open the Settings app (gray cog icon).
- TapConnections (under your account name).
- TapMobile networks (mid-page).
- TapNetwork operators (bottom of the page).
- Turn off“Select automatically”; the switch will turn gray.
- A list of networks will appear; if multiple networks show, the phone is unlocked. If only one appears, it is locked.
- Optional test:Turn off the phone, insert a SIM from another carrier, and restart.
- If the new network appears in the corner and you can make calls, the phone is unlocked.
- If you see “Invalid SIM card” or cannot make calls, the phone is locked.
Unlocking your phone
- Contact your current carrier to request an unlock; many offer web or app options, others require a call.
- Meet any carrier-specific requirements (such as for Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile).
- The process typically completes within a few days.
Why this matters
Knowing if your phone is unlocked ensures it can work seamlessly on any carrier’s network, avoiding surprises when switching providers or selling the device. Unlocking removes restrictions tied to your original carrier, giving you flexibility for travel or resale.
Carriers are the only ones who can perform the unlock, so a simple request often resolves it quickly without voiding warranties. This step is crucial for maximizing your phone’s value and compatibility in today’s multi-carrier landscape.
