HM02 Fly is an incredibly useful ability in the Pokémon games, allowing you to quickly move to any city or location that you have previously visited. This can save you a significant amount of time when adventuring, needing to return to town, or revisiting old locations. Fly is hidden in FireRed, and you’ll need to use the Cut ability to access it.
How to get HM02 Fly in Pokémon FireRed
Follow these steps to successfully acquire HM02 Fly and teach it to your Pokémon.
- Reach Celadon City. This is one of the largest cities in the game, accessible after defeating the Vermillion Gym leader. To get there, you’ll need to take the underground path in Route 8 to bypass Saffron City, which is closed at the moment.
- Exit Celadon City to the west to reach Route 16. This route is normally blocked by a Snorlax until you get the Poké Flute.
- Use “Cut” on the tree directly above you. You’ll see this tree as soon as you enter Route 16, before you reach the Snorlax.
- Continue west and walk through the gatehouse. Enter the small house on the west side of the gatehouse.
- Talk to the girl in the house. She will give you HM02 “Fly”.
- Open your Bag to the Key Items section. Select “TM Case” and then select “FLY” from the list. Choose “Use” from the menu.
- Teach Fly to one of your Pokémon. Select a Pokémon from your party to teach Fly to. The Pokémon must be a Flying type, and the word “ABLE!” will appear next to it. Fly will take up one of the Pokémon’s move slots, so make sure you choose a Pokémon that has a move you no longer need.
- Use Fly to move quickly between cities and towns. The Fly ability will allow you to quickly move to any city or town you have already visited. A map will appear when you use Fly, and you can select from any of the towns or locations you’ve been to. You cannot use Fly to visit places you have not yet reached on your journey.
Why this matters
Having HM02 Fly is a game-changer for navigation in Pokémon FireRed. It drastically cuts down on travel time, allowing you to revisit previous locations instantly without the tedious process of walking or cycling through multiple routes.
This ability is invaluable for completing side quests, returning to Pokémon Centers, or reaching specific areas for item collection or Pokémon training. Mastering its use will significantly enhance your overall gameplay experience and efficiency.
