Nintendo’s new console, the Switch 2, has reportedly become the fastest-selling game console of all time following its recent launch. Nintendo announced that it sold over 3.5 million Switch 2 units within the first four days of its release, surpassing previous records for the company’s hardware launch periods.

Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research and Insights at Niko Partners, confirmed the console’s record-breaking status on X, stating the Switch 2 is “the fastest selling home video game console of all time.” He noted that the PlayStation 4 took 16 days to sell 2.1 million units and six weeks to reach 4.2 million. The Switch 2 also significantly outperformed the sales pace of the PlayStation 5 launch, which achieved 4.4 million units sold-through in seven weeks amidst pandemic-related supply constraints.

Industry observers suggest Nintendo successfully met accumulated demand for a Switch successor by ensuring substantial inventory in key markets. While Switch 2 preorders sold out at major US retailers prior to launch, limited stock was available on launch day. Analysts speculate that the possibility of price increases due to tariffs may have also contributed to the initial demand rush.

In the UK, the Switch 2 did not achieve the biggest console launch ever but ranked as the fourth best-selling console based on NielsenIQ data. Reports indicated it was relatively straightforward for consumers in the UK to purchase a unit on launch day.

Despite a limited lineup of launch titles, analysts had widely predicted strong initial sales for the Switch 2. Record sales are attributed to significant pent-up consumer demand and Nintendo’s ability to produce sufficient units to meet this demand. The company now faces the challenge of maintaining this sales momentum, potentially navigating the impact of future tariffs and competition from alternative handheld devices.

Nintendo has set a sales target of 15 million Switch 2 consoles by the end of March 2026, a goal it appears well-positioned to achieve given its strong start.

For comparison, the original Switch, which launched in March 2017, sold 17.79 million units in its first 13 months. The original Switch has since surpassed 150 million units sold globally and is nearing overtaking the Nintendo DS as the company’s best-selling console to date.
