In Europe, ChatGPT has helped to launch a new industry of AI chat apps. App Radar reports that since the app was released in November 2022, 23.6 million people have downloaded it from the Google Play Store.
Using ChatGPT or comparable technology, the research discovered 40 AI chat applications with over 10,000 users. The pioneering industry in this field was led by Europe. There were 14 applications developed on the continent that attracted 8 million downloads or 34 percent of the industry’s total. The remainder was divided between the Americas (nine apps with 2.7m downloads) and Asia (seven apps with 7.4m downloads). A further eight apps with 5.2m downloads had an unknown country of origin. Turkey is the standout country on the region, with 5.9 million downloads of four applications, including the top three.
How does AI chat apps make money?
Currently, most artificial intelligence (AI) chat apps monetize through advertising and paid upgrades, with freemium models also available. Developers need to provide distinctive services that bring substantial value if they want to attract a big number of paying customers. Sadly for the app developers, current customers don’t seem eager to spend so much.
On the other hand, App Radar co-founder and managing director Thomas Kriebernegg is optimistic about the industry’s future growth.
“Oftentimes app segments end up getting dominated by 10 or 20 apps that account for the vast majority of users. At the moment eight apps have more than a million users, so there’s plenty of room for new challengers… As the market starts to coalesce and leaders emerge it will become much more difficult for new entrants to compete unless they bring something unique and innovative to the table.”
The majority of the existing applications can be found under the Google Play Store’s “Productivity” and “Tools” categories, indicating that they are intended for routine labor and activities. Within the larger umbrella term “Entertainment,” there is a subset created with social interaction in mind.
While analysts anticipate the emergence of new use cases at a rapid pace, it remains to be seen whether customers will prefer specialized AI apps or “one-stop shops” that perform a wide range of functions.
