Ford has hired 350 veteran engineers, including former employees and those from suppliers, after artificial intelligence and automated systems failed to deliver the desired quality levels. Chief Operating Officer Kumar Galhotra stated that Ford had been increasingly relying on automated quality systems, leading to disappointing results. As a result, the company has brought back technical specialists to identify failure points before parts reach the production floor.

Vice President of Vehicle Hardware Engineering Charles Poon acknowledged that there was a mistaken belief that implementing AI and utilizing design requirements would ensure high-quality products. However, Ford is not abandoning its AI initiatives; the rehired engineers, referred to as “gray beard” engineers, will also train younger staff and help reprogram AI tools. This approach is aimed at improving product quality while integrating technology.

Ford expects these rehiring efforts to generate $1 billion in cost reductions this year. The company was also recognized as the top mainstream brand in the JD Power Initial Quality Survey released this week.
