OpenAI has unveiled new capabilities for its Codex tool aimed at enterprise users, expanding its applications in the workplace. The announcement coincides with an internal report highlighting Codex’s growing use in knowledge work beyond software engineering.

According to the report, Codex has surpassed 5 million weekly active users, reflecting more than a sixfold increase since the launch of its desktop app in February. Knowledge workers now account for about 20% of users and are increasing at over three times the rate of developers.

To attract knowledge workers, OpenAI introduced six plug-ins tailored for specific professions, including data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, equity investing, and investment banking. Each plug-in combines integrations, instructions, and context, designed to be effective immediately, while also allowing for user customization.

The release of these plug-ins follows a push by competitors, such as Anthropic, which launched its enterprise agents program in February. OpenAI has been comparatively slower to engage enterprise clients, having introduced plug-in support for Codex only in March.

Additionally, OpenAI unveiled a new Sites feature enabling Codex to produce work as a hosted interactive website rather than just a local file. OpenAI is partnering with Wix, Base44, Replit, Lovable, Figma, and Emergent for this new feature, with plans for a broader partner ecosystem.

An Annotations feature was also introduced, allowing users to specify parts of a document within Codex for more targeted commands and operations.

These enterprise enhancements follow the recently launched OpenAI Deployment Company, a joint venture focused on enterprise clients, backed by over $4 billion in funding from global investment firms. The initiative aims to better integrate OpenAI’s technology into corporate frameworks.

“AI is becoming capable of doing increasingly meaningful work inside organizations,” stated OpenAI chief revenue officer Denise Dresser. She added, “The challenge now is helping companies integrate these systems into the infrastructure and workflows that power their businesses.”
