Microsoft is shifting GitHub Copilot’s billing system from a flat subscription rate to a token-usage model effective June 1. Under the new system, users will be charged based on the number of tokens consumed instead of a fixed monthly fee. This change may heavily disadvantage smaller companies and individual users compared to larger enterprises.
Developers have expressed concerns about potential cost increases associated with this new pricing structure. One Reddit user claimed their monthly payment could rise from approximately $29 to nearly $750. Another user reported a jump from around $50 to approximately $3,000.
Critics argue that the increases appear excessive. Some developers suggested that the high token usage typically indicates inefficient coding practices. “The only way it gets crazy like that is if you are purely ‘vibe coding’ with a ton of bloated iterations,” one user noted, indicating that responsible use of the tool should not lead to such inflated costs.
Meanwhile, discussions on social media have raised questions about the economics of the previous billing model. “Holy fuck how much money was Copilot losing?” one Redditor asked, highlighting uncertainty surrounding the former pricing structure. Some users feel Microsoft encouraged heavy usage of the service, only to retract suitable access through the new billing model.
