Project Genie is launching today for all adult Google AI Ultra subscribers worldwide, following its debut in the United States this January. The service introduces a new Street View capability, which generates interactive landscapes from real-world locations available on Google Maps, initially focusing on sites in the U.S.
Project Genie allows users to create explorable snow-globe environments from written prompts. The generated creations exist for 60 seconds, rendered at 720p and 24 frames per second. Users can design these worlds in any artistic style and include a character based on their specified descriptions, while controlling the camera within the environment.
The new Street View functionality enhances the user experience by integrating location photos from Google Maps, thus grounding the AI-generated worlds in actual real-life settings. During a demonstration at Google’s I/O event, the technology showcased transforming the Golden Gate Bridge into an underwater scuba scene. Google has plans to extend the Street View feature to additional locations over time.
Despite its appearance, Project Genie is not a game generator and lacks the intricacies and mechanics associated with full game development. The system produces limited 3D environments with a controllable camera attached to an avatar, but does not prioritize narrative flow in interactive stories. This distinction is vital, as the capabilities of Project Genie reflect a different approach compared to traditional game design.
