Apple plans to enable users to select third-party AI models for generative tasks in its upcoming operating systems, iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. This report, attributed to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, indicates a shift in Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy, prioritizing user choice. The feature, internally dubbed Extensions, will allow integration of various AI models into Apple’s App Store programs.
Extensions will grant users access to generative AI capabilities through Apple Intelligence features, including Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground. “Extensions allow you to access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand,” according to a message in test versions of the software.
Earlier reports confirmed that Apple intends for its future AI chatbot to support selecting from different AI models. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has already been incorporated into Apple Intelligence to address some generative AI tasks.
This strategic pivot appears to reflect a focus on providing flexibility rather than developing a competitive in-house AI model. Traditionally, Apple has maintained a closed ecosystem, but delays and setbacks in its AI development may have encouraged this more inclusive approach.
As Apple works to integrate third-party AI solutions, it aims to establish a meaningful presence in the evolving AI landscape.
