Google launched a native Mac App for its AI Tool, Gemini, allowing users more efficient access compared to the previous web-only option. This launch addresses user requests by providing a dedicated application that includes key features to enhance productivity on macOS.
The app supports essential keyboard shortcuts, such as Option + Space to launch a quick chat and Option + Shift + Space to open a full chat window. Users can also launch the app from a Dock shortcut or via an icon in the Menu Bar.
In addition to chat functionality, the Gemini App allows users to share their windows or screens for context during interactions. During setup, users must grant necessary permissions in Settings to enable this feature. To share a window, users click the ‘+’ icon and select ‘Share window’.
The Gemini app offers several capabilities: users can ask questions for quick answers without using a browser, draft emails and documents, summarize lengthy articles, brainstorm creative ideas, receive coding assistance, and analyze uploaded images by asking Gemini related questions.
Installation requires a Mac running macOS Sequoia 15 or later, with at least 8 GB of RAM and 200MB of free disk space. A stable internet connection is also necessary for accessing Gemini’s features. The Gemini app is free to use, but additional features are available for users subscribed to Google AI Pro plans. The company stated that this rollout aims to provide a more integrated experience for users of its AI tools.
