WhatsApp is launching a new feature that allows users to create unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers. This development aims to enhance user privacy and security by enabling users to interact without revealing personal contact information.

The rollout of the username feature has begun in phases for a limited number of Android and iOS users, with a broader release expected later in 2023. The feature has been under development for several months, with initial communications sent to business account holders in November 2022, indicating a planned rollout for 2026.

Users can check their eligibility for the new feature by navigating to the profile settings in the app. The usernames will allow individuals to share their identity similar to pseudonyms used on other social media platforms, eliminating the need to disclose their phone numbers to new contacts. Phone numbers will remain hidden from those who connect using the username.

According to reports from WABetaInfo, the usernames must range between 3 to 35 characters. They cannot start with “www.” or end with common domain suffixes like “.com” or “.net,” to avoid confusion with websites. Each username must contain at least one alphabetical character, though underscores, lowercase letters, and periods are permitted.

Additionally, usernames must be unique across Meta’s platforms, including Instagram and Facebook. Users will need to link their accounts through Accounts Center to confirm ownership of a chosen username that may exist on other Meta services.
