Apple is set to release an emergency patch for iPhones running iOS 18 to counteract the DarkSword spyware threat. This patch represents a rare move by Apple, which typically advises users to upgrade to the latest iOS version rather than issuing specific patches for older iterations.
The DarkSword spyware is a web-based tool that allows hackers to steal data from iPhones and is available to the public. Current users of iOS 18 remain vulnerable to this threat, as Apple’s latest iOS version, 26.4, has already implemented protections against it. Research by TelemetryDeck revealed that approximately 19% of iPhone users were still operating on iOS 18 at the end of February, often due to slow update habits or resistance to the new “Liquid Glass” user interface introduced in iOS 26.
An Apple spokesperson confirmed the patch’s release, which will take place on Wednesday morning. This patch will not upgrade devices to iOS 26; users will continue to operate on iOS 18 while gaining protection from DarkSword. Apple continues to encourage users to transition to iOS 26 for enhanced security features and protections.
Historically, Apple’s strategy has emphasized pushing users towards the latest software updates to mitigate security vulnerabilities. The forthcoming patch highlights the significant threat posed by easily accessible spyware tools and the company’s commitment to safeguarding users, even on older operating systems.
