Amazon upgraded Alexa+ to allow users to order food from Uber Eats and Grubhub through conversational interactions, simulating a natural ordering experience.
The new feature aims to enhance customer engagement by enabling users to request cuisines, explore menus, and customize meals within a single dialogue. Orders can be modified in real-time, accommodating changes like adding desserts or adjusting quantities during the conversation.
To utilize the feature, users must link their Uber Eats or Grubhub accounts via the Alexa app. This integration also syncs previous orders, simplifying reordering and restaurant discovery. Users can initiate an order by saying phrases such as, “I want to order Italian for delivery,” after which Alexa+ presents a range of local restaurant options. Once the order is finalized, a detailed summary of the items, including quantities and prices, is provided.
The rollout targets Alexa+ customers using Echo Show 8 devices and larger models. Amazon stated this development supports its broader strategy to create adaptive interaction models, laying the foundation for similar features in grocery shopping and travel.
This update arrives amidst growing AI applications within the food service industry. Fast food chains have embraced AI support at drive-thrus, but issues around order accuracy persist. In 2024, McDonald’s suspended its AI rollout due to errors, including incidences where multiple incorrect items were added to orders. Taco Bell also faced similar challenges, with social media highlighting errors made by its AI systems.
The rollout of Alexa+ began in the U.S. and has recently expanded to the U.K. The service now features various personality styles for Alexa, including “Sassy,” “Brief,” “Chill,” and “Sweet,” enhancing user interaction options.
