Bluesky has introduced a new AI application named Attie, designed to assist users in creating custom feeds. The app debuted at the Atmosphere conference and will be beta tested by attendees using Anthropic’s Claude AI model to build a social app on the AT Protocol.
Attie operates independently of the Bluesky app, as clarified by interim CEO Toni Schneider. Users can create personalized feeds by typing commands in natural language, akin to interacting with a chatbot, emphasizing ease of use without prior coding knowledge.
Account sign-in via Atmosphere allows Attie to customize user experiences based on data shared across the ecosystem. This design aims to enable users to tailor their feeds and discover relevant posts through straightforward inquiries.
Schneider noted that the initiative seeks to enhance user engagement on the Atmosphere platform. He stated, “You control it, you shape it, without having to write code or know how to set up these feeds.”
Attie’s launch focuses on feed creation, with future plans to allow users to develop their own social applications. Graber and her team commenced Attie’s development months ago, motivated by a desire to return to product innovation after her tenure as CEO.
Graber criticized major platforms for using AI primarily to serve their interests rather than those of users. “We think AI should serve people, not platforms,” she said, advocating for an open protocol to empower users.
In conjunction with the launch, Bluesky announced that it secured an additional $100 million in funding, providing over three years of operational runway. Schneider highlighted that this funding supports the company’s focus on enhancing privacy controls and monetizing its platform.
Despite connections to crypto investors, Schneider confirmed there are no plans for crypto integration, easing concerns about potential scams. Bluesky is exploring alternative monetization strategies for Attie, including possible subscription models.
Schneider likened the potential growth of the Atmosphere platform to WordPress, envisioning a decentralized ecosystem where independent services coexist. He remarked, “At the center of [the Atmosphere] is a completely open system, so anybody can participate,” highlighting the ambition for a future ecosystem with substantial economic potential.
