OpenAI has indefinitely paused plans to develop an “erotic” mode for its ChatGPT chatbot, according to a Financial Times report published Thursday.
The decision represents a consolidation of OpenAI’s focus, following the deprioritization of other features, as the company pivots to concentrate on business users and coders. CEO Sam Altman first proposed the “adult mode” in October. The concept generated controversy among technology watchdog groups and OpenAI staff.
A January meeting between company executives and advisors included a caution that OpenAI could be developing a “sexy suicide coach,” The Wall Street Journal previously reported. The Financial Times noted the erotic feature now has no timeline for release. An OpenAI spokesperson declined to comment further when reached by TechCrunch.
Previously, OpenAI deprioritized “Instant Checkout,” a ChatGPT feature enabling purchases from e-commerce sites. On Wednesday, the company announced the shutdown of Sora, its AI video generator, which had launched in 2024.
These actions follow a Wall Street Journal report indicating a “major strategy shift” for OpenAI to reduce distractions and focus on core areas. This shift occurs amid competition from Anthropic, which has released coding and business tools. OpenAI recently secured a $200 million agreement with the Department of Defense, while Anthropic is in a legal dispute with the agency.
