Anthropic announced updates for its Claude Code and Claude Cowork tools, enabling these AI resources to use a user’s computer for various tasks. The updates are currently available in research preview for Pro and Max subscribers on macOS.
This development enhances Claude’s functionality, allowing it to open files, utilize the browser, and operate development tools. The AI will prioritize using connectors for supported services, such as Google Workspace and Slack, to execute tasks. If no connector is available, Claude can still fulfill assigned tasks but will ask for permission before taking action on the computer. Anthropic advised caution, recommending that users avoid handling sensitive information with this feature.
The initial rollout of computer use functionality is exclusive to Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers. Being in research preview, the feature will be refined based on user feedback. Additionally, it will integrate with the Dispatch feature, which enables continuous conversations across phone and desktop.
Claude Cowork, launched earlier this year as a more casual iteration of the Claude Code AI agent, provides a user-friendly interface for broader audiences.
