This guide will show you how to delete text messages from your iPhone using different methods for single messages, entire conversations, and multiple threads at once.
A step-by-step guide to removing text messages on iPhone
Follow these methods to delete messages, conversations, or multiple threads from your device.
Method 1: Deleting a single message
- Open your iPhone’s Messages app by tapping the white speech bubble on a green background icon.
- Select a conversation from the Messages menu.
- Tap and hold the specific text message you wish to delete until a menu appears.
- Select More from the pop-up menu.
- Check the blue circles next to any additional messages you want to delete.
- Tap the trash can icon in the bottom left corner.
- Tap Delete Message to confirm. If deleting multiple messages, this may say “Delete [number] Messages”.
Method 2: Deleting an entire conversation
- Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
- From the main Messages menu, swipe left on the conversation you want to remove.
- Tap the red Delete button that appears.
- Warning: Media downloaded from the conversation will remain in your Camera Roll.
Method 3: Deleting multiple conversations
- Open the Messages app and ensure you are on the main conversation list.
- Tap Edit in the top left corner of the screen.
- Select the circles next to each conversation you wish to delete.
- Alternatively, press and hold a blank circle and drag your finger down to select several threads quickly.
- Tap Delete in the bottom right corner to remove the selected conversations.
Now that you have cleaned up your Messages app, consider organizing your remaining conversations by pinning important threads to the top of the list. This helps keep your most frequent contacts easily accessible and reduces clutter in your messaging inbox.
Additionally, you might want to review your iCloud settings to ensure that your message deletions sync across all your Apple devices. If you use Messages in iCloud, deleting a message on one device will remove it from your other devices signed in with the same Apple ID.
