Spotify announced on Monday that its AI-powered “Prompted Playlist” feature is now available to Premium subscribers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden. The rollout follows initial testing in New Zealand and a recent launch in the United States and Canada.
The tool allows users to create custom playlists by describing specific themes, moods, or scenarios in their own words. Prompts can reference musical eras, genres, activities, lyrics, instruments, or inspirations from TV shows, movies, and personal milestones. To use the feature, users tap “Create,” select “Prompted Playlist,” and enter a prompt in English. Users can also specify whether they want the playlist to include mostly new music or tracks from their existing library.
Once a prompt is submitted, Spotify’s AI generates a playlist based on the user’s listening history and current music or cultural trends. Each song includes a short explanation regarding its selection. Users can refine playlists by adjusting prompts or scheduling auto-refreshes on a daily or weekly basis.
The feature remains in beta, and Spotify notes that usage limits are in place. Some users have reported hitting limits after approximately 20 to 30 prompts.
Spotify has recently introduced other AI features, including Page Match, which allows users to scan a physical book page to jump to the corresponding spot in an audiobook, and an update to lyrics that provides global translations and offline access. Last week, SeatGeek partnered with Spotify to surface concert ticket links and tour dates within the app.
Internally, Co-CEO Gustav Söderström stated earlier this month that Spotify’s top developers have not written code since December due to AI implementation. Additionally, Spotify is expanding into physical book sales; U.S. and U.K. users will soon be able to buy physical copies directly from the app.
