Apple is rolling out a major update for its Podcasts app that adds support for HTTP Live Streaming video technology. The app previously only streamed video in formats like MOV, MP4 and M4V. HLS lets users switch seamlessly between watching and listening, with a horizontal full display option. It also enables downloads of both video and audio for offline viewing, which was not possible with the previous RSS-like feed method.
The update brings picture-in-picture support for multitasking on iPad. The app will also automatically adjust picture quality for smooth playback on both Wi-Fi and cellular networks. HLS remains a distribution option alongside RSS feeds, but offers clearer advantages for video-first experiences.
The update is in beta now and will roll out widely this spring as part of the iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 releases.
