This article teaches you how to mirror your Windows screen to an external display such as a TV, monitor, or projector using either a wired or wireless method.

Before you start: For wireless mirroring, ensure your display receiver is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer. For wired connections, you will need an HDMI cable and available HDMI ports on both devices.

How to mirror your Windows screen to an external display

Follow the steps below to connect your Windows PC to a TV, monitor, or projector using your preferred method.

Method 1: Using Miracast wirelessly

  • Make sure your screen receiver is set up and connected to Wi-Fi. Your receiver display must be connected to the same wireless network as your computer to use Miracast’s screen-mirroring feature.
  • Open your computer’s Start menu by clicking the Windows icon in the lower-left corner of your desktop.
  • Click the gear icon on the bottom-left corner, located above the Power icon, to open Windows Settings.
  • ClickDevices in the Settings window to open your device and connection settings.
  • ClickBluetooth & other devices on the left menu at the top of the navigation panel.
  • Click+ Add Bluetooth or other device at the top of the Bluetooth & other devices page.
  • SelectWireless display or dock on the “Add a device” menu to scan your network for available display devices.
  • Click your display’s name on the “Add a device” menu to connect and mirror your computer’s screen.
  • Click the Done button to close the menu and start viewing your screen on the external display.

Method 2: Using an HDMI cable

  • Get an HDMI cable to transmit uncompressed audio and video in high definition. If your device lacks an HDMI port, purchase an adapter such as Mini DisplayPort to HDMI.
  • Plug one end of the cable into an HDMI port on your computer, usually found on the side or back of the device.
  • Plug the other end of the cable into your TV, monitor, or projector’s HDMI port.
  • Switch your TV or projector to the correct HDMI input using your display’s remote or menu buttons. Your computer’s screen will automatically mirror once the correct input is selected.
Pro tip: If your wireless connection is laggy or pixelated, try moving closer to your router or switching to a wired HDMI connection for a more stable and higher-quality display experience.

Now that your screen is mirrored, you can adjust display settings to extend your desktop instead of simply duplicating it. Press Windows key + P to quickly switch between display modes like Extend, Duplicate, or Second screen only. This keyboard shortcut provides a fast way to toggle between configurations without diving into settings menus each time.

You can also customize resolution and orientation by navigating to Settings > System > Display. This is especially useful when connecting to displays with different aspect ratios or when setting up multi-monitor workstations for improved productivity. Taking a moment to configure these options ensures your external display looks sharp and functions exactly how you need it.
