OpenAI plans to offer a free one-year subscription to its ChatGPT Go plan to all users in India, including existing subscribers, as part of its strategy to expand in the country. The promotion starts on November 4, 2025, coinciding with OpenAI’s DevDay Exchange developer conference in Bengaluru. The event will include India-specific announcements for local developers and enterprises.

ChatGPT Go launched in India in August as OpenAI’s most affordable paid subscription, priced at less than $5 per month. The free offer targets growth in India, OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States, where the company has seen high app downloads but faced challenges in generating revenue from paid plans.

Current ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will receive the free 12-month plan on top of their existing access. This initiative supports OpenAI’s broader expansion efforts, including the recent opening of an office in New Delhi and the hiring of a local team to strengthen its presence.

The move aligns with competitive strategies in India. Perplexity partnered with Airtel to provide free Perplexity Pro subscriptions to 360 million Airtel subscribers. Google introduced a free one-year AI Pro plan for students in the country. These actions aim to attract users in a market with a large, youthful population.
