Elon Musk’s startup, xAI, is developing Grokipedia, an artificial intelligence-driven platform designed as a competitor to Wikipedia. The project aims to shift from Wikipedia’s crowd-sourced editing model to an AI-centered approach for curating and presenting online knowledge.
Grokipedia is not yet available to the public. A phased rollout is planned, which will start with a limited beta program before a full public launch. The announcement has sparked discussion about the role of AI in creating and managing encyclopedias.
Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger responded to the news with cautious optimism. Sanger stated that he welcomes more online encyclopedias but cautioned against potential biases in AI-generated knowledge, comparing them to biases he has observed in Wikipedia. He expressed hope that Grokipedia will manage to avoid these issues but remains concerned about the possibility of inherent bias within the AI models powering the service.
