Google’s Gemini iOS app has ascended to the top spot in the Top Free Apps chart on the App Store in several countries as of Friday, marking the first time the chatbot has achieved this milestone, surpassing previous leaders like ChatGPT and DeepSeek. Logan Kilpatrick, product lead for Google AI Studio and Gemini API, initially noted the app’s rise on X (formerly Twitter), and Gadgets 360 staff independently verified that Gemini remained at the top of the charts in India and the US on Monday morning.

The surge in popularity coincides with recent updates to the Gemini chatbot, including the “Nano Banana” image editing tool. This new feature, released at the end of August, allows users to upload and make inline edits to images while maintaining character consistency and selectively removing elements. Gemini also ranked second in Canada and the UK.

The Nano Banana feature is available to all Gemini users, with paid users benefiting from higher rate limits. Google has been rapidly introducing new features to Gemini, including live voice translation in the Google Translate app and a Gemini-powered language coaching tool designed to aid users in language learning and practice.

These advancements and the introduction of the Nano Banana image editing tool, which addresses common challenges in AI image manipulation, are likely contributing factors to Gemini’s increased popularity and its rise to the top of the App Store charts.
