Apple has announced Final Cut Camera 2.0, a major update to its professional video recording app, initially launched in June 2024. The update will be available later this month as a free download or update on the App Store.
The announcement was made alongside Apple’s “Awe Dropping” event, detailing several new features and improvements. While some features are exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro models, others will be available on older devices. The app is compatible with iPhone Xs or newer, running iOS 18.6 or later. Some features require iOS 26 or iPhone 17 Pro models.
Version 2.0 introduces support for the ProRes RAW video codec, offering the flexibility of RAW videos combined with the efficiency of ProRes. This allows users to adjust exposure and white balance during recording. This feature is exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models.
Apple also plans to release Final Cut Pro 11.2 for Mac and Final Cut Pro 2.3 for iPad, which will include support for editing ProRes RAW footage.
The update also brings open-gate recording, utilizing the full camera sensor to capture a wider field of view at resolutions exceeding DCI 4K. Final Cut Camera 2.0 now supports genlock, enabling users to synchronize their iPhone 17 Pro models with other recording devices using the same reference signal. Apple will also release a Genlock API for third-party developers.
The new version supports the Centre Stage front-camera feature across the iPhone 17 lineup, allowing users to capture horizontal and vertical videos without rotating the phone.
Additional features include support for Apple Log 2 with iPhone 17 Pro models and a Timecode feature, allowing users to embed the time of day, record run, and external timecodes into the video.
The app also supports video capture via the new 200 mm telephoto camera, using ProRes up to 4K 60 fps on the latest Pro handsets.
