Multiple Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S23 users have reported experiencing a green line issue on their devices, raising concerns about the reliability of updates. This situation has frustrated many users, especially since Samsung’s free screen replacement campaign has ended. Robin Williams on X reported the issue.

Some Galaxy S23 screens are failing after updates

Users have reported that their Galaxy S23 devices did not show any physical damage or exposure to external factors like drops or water prior to the issue. Many of the complaints appeared on social media and community forums, with users noting that the problem often arose shortly after a software update.

A December 2024 post on a community forum states, “I updated the software on my Galaxy S23 yesterday night and I went to sleep after. Today morning I wake up to green line on my screen.” This particular issue occurred after updating to the November security patch.

Another forum post from February indicated, “I was browsing through my phone and a green line suddenly pops up on the screen out of nowhere. I have tried everything but nothing seems to work. The green line is still there.” This issue occurred soon after installing an unspecified update on a Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Possible underlying issues and previous campaigns

Research indicates that most affected devices may require display replacement, suggesting that the causes are not related to inappropriate device use. It highlights a contradiction for users, as brands promote nearly a decade of software updates, yet many now opt to avoid them. Avoiding these updates compromises device security.

This green line issue is not unique to Samsung; several OnePlus devices faced similar problems last year. OnePlus responded with its “Green Line Worry-Free Solution,” which included a lifetime warranty for affected devices and free screen replacements, alongside initiatives for enhanced display technology.

Reports of green and pink line issues resurfacing for Galaxy S23 users indicate that these issues resemble previous problems seen in other models, such as the Galaxy S20 Plus. Some customers expressed disappointment as these issues developed without any evident physical damage, and Samsung’s previous screen replacement campaign has concluded. Users now face potential repair costs.

Guidance for affected users

Samsung’s OLED screens can develop vertical lines due to a damaged LED or pixel element, often linked to overheating or other causes. Users whose devices are affected are encouraged to reach out to Samsung Support. Support representatives may assist with next steps, including an evaluation at an authorized service center.

Typically, Samsung assesses the situation to determine whether the screen replacement can occur at no cost, adhering to company policies and the technician’s evaluation at service centers. In India, Samsung offered screen and battery kit replacements for previous models, although availability varies by country based on eligibility criteria.
