iOS 18.4 introduces native call recording and transcription via Apple Intelligence, now available in beta. Here’s how to use these tools, including legal and compatibility details.
How to record calls
Available on iPhone Xs and later running iOS 18.1 or newer:
- Open the Phone app and start or answer a call.
- Tap “Start Call Recording” at the top left.
- Recording ends automatically when the call concludes. The audio saves to the Voice Memos app.
How to transcribe calls
Exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro, 16, and 16e models with iOS 18.4 and Apple Intelligence:
- Record the call using the steps above.
- After ending the call, open the Notes app.
- Tap “Transcribe” to generate a text version of the recording. Processing time varies with length.
- Edit, summarize, or organize the transcript using Apple Intelligence tools (e.g., tables, indexes).
Key differences: Recording vs Transcription
| Feature | Call Recording | Transcription |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | iPhone Xs+ | iPhone 15 Pro+ |
| iOS Version | iOS 18.1+ | iOS 18.4+ |
| Saved To | Voice Memos | Notes app |

Why is call recording unavailable in the EU?
Call recording is restricted in the European Union due to GDPR and national privacy laws. Apple has delayed rollout to ensure compliance with data protection regulations.
Important notes
- Beta warning: iOS 18.4 is in beta; avoid installing on primary devices.
- Privacy: Both parties receive a notification when recording starts. Transcripts/recordings are stored locally unless shared.
- Release date: iOS 18.4 is expected in April 2025.
These tools streamline call management, but always verify local laws before recording conversations.
