Microsoft has issued a warning regarding an issue that may arise when using installation media to install Windows 11, version 24H2, which could prevent the operating system from accepting future security updates.
Microsoft warns of Windows 11 24H2 installation issues
The problem occurs when using media, such as CD and USB flash drives, to install Windows 11 version 24H2, particularly when the media includes security updates released between October 8, 2024, and November 12, 2024. In such cases, the device may remain in a state where it cannot accept further Windows security updates.
This issue specifically affects installations created with the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates. It does not occur when updates are applied via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog website. Additionally, using media that incorporates the December 2024 monthly security update, released on December 10, 2024, does not result in this issue.
Workaround and next steps
To avoid encountering updating problems, Microsoft advises against installing Windows 11, version 24H2, with the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates. Instead, users should ensure that their installation media includes the December 2024 security update or later.
Microsoft is actively working on a resolution and will provide more information when it becomes available. The issue affects Windows 11, version 24H2 for client devices, while servers are not impacted.
The installation media issue adds to a series of problems associated with the 24H2 major feature update. Users have previously reported sound issues on Dirac devices or USB DAC sound systems, launch problems with Outlook due to outdated Google Workspace Sync, Auto HDR causing game freezes and incorrect colors, and functional issues with USB scanners utilizing the eSCL protocol.
Notably, the update has resulted in performance problems, crashes, freezes, and audio glitches in several Ubisoft games, including titles such as Assassin’s Creed, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. The update was even temporarily blocked on certain ASUS hardware and other configurations that resulted in issues.
