If you’ve been thinking of splashing out on the Galaxy Z Fold 6, you might want to second-think it following the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. Many were slightly underwhelmed when Samsung’s flagship foldable debuted this July, given the modest updates, especially when other brands kept pushing the hardware envelope.
Now, Samsung is taking its sleeker, lighter Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition to market to up the ante by delivering a less bulky, less gangly device with a refined experience worth noting.
Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition specs
Perhaps similar but more noteworthy improvements come wrapped up in the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition unveiled in South Korea. The biggest draw is the screen size. It’s the biggest foldable display Samsung has put out, boasting a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch inner screen. The outer screen’s aspect ratio now bridges the gap to match the size of modern smartphones more closely, and its lack of cramped feeling compared to the Fold 6 certainly helps.
There’s also a weight difference. Fold 6 Special Edition is lighter and thinner, only 3 grams thinner than Fold 6 and 4.9mm when unfolded. The device is noticeably slim, even folded down, at just 10.6mm. Back, there’s a fresh striped pattern for those who care about aesthetics.
Cameras take a leap
The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition’s camera system has been discussed to no end. That downtrodden 50MP main camera on the Fold 6 has been aging, as Samsung’s camera competition is increasing its lead. With a 200MP primary, the same as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Special Edition now gets a serious upgrade. There are no changes to the front-facing cameras, but the device includes a 12MP ultrawide lens and a 10MP camera with 3x optical zoom.
Same core, different experience
Revealed under the hood, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition has the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chip, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of internal storage as the Fold 6. Aside from that, the battery packs the same 4,400mAh capacity and 25W charging speed. Out of the box, it will come with Android 14, Samsung slathering on One UI 6.1.1, and a promise of an incredibly long seven years of software and patches.
Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition release date and price
Here’s where things might fall short for many fans: Only the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition will be available in South Korea. Aimed at starting October 25, it will go on sale for $2,000 (2,789,600 won) through major carriers and Samsung’s online store. Hints hint it might launch in China under a different name, but there is nothing to say whether it will ever come to international markets. If you’re outside South Korea, you’re out of luck.
