Facebook is developing a smartwatch

Facebook is the perfect example of a company that leaves nothing untried and now they are rumored to develop a smartwatch.

It was only a matter of time before they decided to create a smartwatch, an accessory that is gaining traction worldwide, whether with expensive models such as the Apple Watch or smart bracelets.

According to The Information, Facebook’s proposal would be focused on messaging, just as Apple’s is focused on health. This does not mean that the Facebook watch would not monitor parameters of this type, something that would be very useful for the company as it would add hundreds of new data for its purposes.

But the main differentiation of this watch concerning others would be the integration into the ecosystem of Facebook apps and services, we assume that at least the three main applications, Facebook (with Messenger), WhatsApp, and Instagram.

This watch would have LTE connectivity to be able to be used independently from the phone and would use Android as the operating system. Yes, Android, not Wear OS, which is a bit strange but perhaps Facebook wants to control the possibilities of its new device as much as possible.

The new product would arrive next year, in 2022, with a new variant the following year. We don’t know estimated dates or prices but it seems a bit of a gamble for a company that has failed, at least so far, to hit the nail on the head when it comes to hardware.

Not to mention how unsettling it would be for many to wear a device on their wrist linked to the servers of a company with a history of privacy-related scandals as big as Facebook’s.
