Xiaomi shows its new retractable camera lenses for smartphones. While Xiaomi has always been one of the pioneers in the field of smartphone photography, it seems that the Chinese company is still experimenting with the possibilities of cameras for their phones. After surprising us with the cameras under the screen and being the first to introduce a 108MP sensor in a phone, yesterday Xiaomi showed us their two next camera systems: a large aperture retractable camera lens equivalent to a 120mm lens, and a new telemacro lens equivalent to 50mm.

Presented in two short videos of just a few seconds posted on their Twitter, we were able to see these new lenses in action, already installed in the company’s next flagship (or perhaps just a test model) where this retractable camera is shown.

In the same post, Xiaomi explains that it is a concept clearly inspired by traditional camera designs and is “optimized with bigger aperture and upgraded stabilizer” to provide better portraits and low-light shots. However, they did not share any photo samples or other details about how soon we would see this technology in a real product.

The company also released a second video showing how its telemacro lens works, allowing smartphone photographers to get sharp, bright colors even in close-up photos. The telemacro technology is a 2-in-1 macro lens that zooms in on a subject and allows users to adjust the focus when they are ready.

Xiaomi shows its new retractable camera lenses for smartphones. Unfortunately, for the moment Xiaomi did not want to share more information about these new technologies. Although given the company’s history with the deployment of its most innovative projects, it would not be surprising to see them appear in a real product launch in the near future.
