Google has announced that Google Wallet will support digital IDs from select European Union states starting this summer. The expansion also includes a new age verification process through a partnership with Sparkasse Bank.

The specific EU countries eligible to add their IDs to Google Wallet have not been revealed. The process is expected to resemble existing procedures for adding passports in the UK and US, where users need to record a video selfie, scan their government ID, and allow Google Wallet to cross-reference the two.

Google has been enhancing support for age verification since early 2025, in accordance with the UK’s Online Safety Act and various international laws. In April 2025, the company introduced Zero Proof Knowledge technology to enable secure age verification using IDs. The integration with Sparkasse Bank allows customers to confirm their age via Google Wallet without sharing personal details such as name, address, or birth date.

In addition to ID and age verification features, Google is improving Google Pay for online checkouts in the EU. Merchants can support direct checkout with payment options stored in Google Wallet, similar to Apple Pay. Google has also updated its Secure Payment Authentication feature, allowing EU customers to use Google Pay on European websites with biometric verification, thereby eliminating the need for a one-time passcode or additional verification sites.
