Samsung and Google unveiled their upcoming Android XR smartglasses at Google I/O, developed in collaboration with eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. This announcement follows last year’s partnership between Google and Samsung aimed at creating a new line of smartglasses.
The smartglasses are designed as companion devices that will leverage smartphone processing power, primarily through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections. Features will include navigation assistance, access to notifications, real-time speech and text translation, and voice controls powered by Gemini. These capabilities aim to enable users to keep their phones in pockets while remaining engaged with their surroundings.
The first generation of the smartglasses will be audio-only, without built-in displays. They will utilize onboard speakers, voice controls, and cameras for task execution and app interaction. According to a blog post by Google, two distinct designs will be available: Gentle Monster’s pair will showcase “disruptive yet refined aesthetics,” while Warby Parker’s version will present a more traditional silhouette.
This product strategy aims to attract both mainstream buyers and tech-savvy enthusiasts. The smartglasses are anticipated to launch later this fall in select markets, although specific pricing details and exact release dates have yet to be announced.
