OpenAI has launched mobile access to its Codex coding app for all ChatGPT users, effective immediately. This feature allows users to utilize Codex projects through the ChatGPT app on Android and iOS platforms.

The integration does not enable programming directly on mobile devices. Instead, users can interact with Codex while it operates on a physical device or a remote server, ensuring that files, credentials, and permissions remain secure. ChatGPT can deliver updates, including screenshots and test results, allowing users to manage requests while away from their coding environment.

According to OpenAI, “Under the hood, Codex uses a secure relay layer that keeps trusted machines reachable across devices without exposing them directly to the public internet.” This setup maintains session state and context as users navigate across their devices signed into ChatGPT.

The launch serves as a counter to Anthropic, which has provided mobile access to its Claude Code users since last fall. It is also part of OpenAI’s broader initiative to develop a super app, integrating multiple applications into a single platform experience. In March, OpenAI confirmed plans to create a desktop app that will combine ChatGPT, Codex, and its Atlas web browser.

To access the new mobile features, users should update the ChatGPT app on their phones and the Codex app on their Macs. Support for connecting the Windows app to Codex is expected to be available soon.
