Meta has acquired startup Assured Robot Intelligence, which focuses on developing AI models for humanoid robots. The acquisition was finalized on Friday, according to a spokesperson from Meta.
This move aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to enhance its consumer AI initiatives, as the company invests hundreds of billions of dollars to integrate AI systems into daily life. Experts suggest that AI-powered robots could eventually assist users with manual tasks.
Meta’s efforts in this area will likely position it in competition with xAI, Elon Musk’s startup that is also exploring humanoid robotics for public use. Musk has previously stated that humanoid robots represent a future growth opportunity for Tesla, predicting “humanoid robots will be the biggest product ever,” due to strong market demand.
In parallel, developers in China are advancing their own humanoid robots targeted for household environments. Additionally, Amazon’s acquisition of humanoid robot maker Fauna earlier this year signals interest from major tech companies in the robot companion market.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding humanoid robots, consumer adoption remains uncertain. Currently, automated vacuum cleaners are the only prevalent smart robots in homes, yet their market penetration is limited. These devices, although handy, do not outperform manual vacuums regarding effectiveness and efficiency.
Consumer acceptance of autonomous robotic devices may face hurdles related to privacy and autonomy concerns. It may take years or even decades for AI-powered robots to reach a price-performance level that justifies their cost and to gain widespread adoption.
Experts warn that the pursuit of humanoid robots may not yield immediate profits, and significant revenue generation from such products could be a long-term prospect, possibly extending well into the next century. Despite this uncertainty, major tech firms are expected to continue investing heavily in AI robotics, as the competition intensifies in pursuing innovative consumer technologies.
