Snapchat has launched a new advertising format that integrates sponsored artificial intelligence chatbots into users’ inboxes, allowing direct interaction within the messaging stream. This feature builds upon the existing Sponsored Snaps initiative, with custom branded AI chatbots appearing alongside regular snaps.
The new chatbots enable Snapchat users to communicate through suggested prompts and ask follow-up questions related to brands and products. However, the implementation raises concerns about user experience, as these promotions may disrupt personal conversations within direct messages. Snap stated that integrating chatbots will enhance interactions, making them “more immediate, personal, and useful.”
Snap’s data shows significant messaging activity, with Snapchatters sending over 950 billion messages in Q1 2026 and more than half a billion interactions with My AI since its launch. Sponsored Snaps, introduced in September 2024, have reportedly increased conversions by 22% compared to other ad formats, suggesting a potential for success with the AI chat implementation.
Nevertheless, there are risks involved. If multiple brands utilize this ad format simultaneously, user inboxes could be flooded with AI chats, diluting the personal nature of conversations. This could threaten the perception of privacy within Snapchat’s messaging platform.
Snap is responding to stagnating user growth in key markets and recently made significant staff cuts to stabilize its business. The company is actively exploring new advertising opportunities, even if they intrude on private messaging. Historical examples indicate mixed user sentiment towards sponsored content in messaging apps. Meta, for example, faced backlash for integrating ads into WhatsApp and Messenger, leading to the abandonment of similar projects.
Despite the potential for user dissatisfaction, Snap aims to pilot its Sponsored AI chatbot ads in partnership with Experian, with plans to expand the offering to all brands thereafter. The decision to leverage AI chatbots reflects current trends and Snap’s need to generate new revenue streams amid a challenging market environment.
