Threads plans to introduce live chats, a feature akin to Broadcast Channels available on Instagram and Messenger. This development aims to enhance user engagement during real-time discussions and event-related conversations.

Broadcast Channels, launched by Instagram in 2023, allows users to follow creators or brands in a read-only format. The new live chats on Threads will enable users to start conversations with select collaborators, who can send messages while followers can subscribe to these chats without active participation.

Connor Hayes, Chief of Threads, announced the feature at Coachella, emphasizing its potential to facilitate real-time interaction. “We want to be this real-time conversation for what’s going on in the world,” he said. Hayes noted that live chats would provide a dedicated discussion space for events, such as Coachella, allowing participants to engage without cluttering their main feed with frequent posts.

By implementing this feature, Threads aims to offer an alternative to traditional content updates, enhancing user experience during high-profile events. The ability to follow chats may counteract issues that arose on platforms like Twitter, where hashtags often became overwhelmed with spam and irrelevant content.

Live chats could mitigate these challenges by restricting the number of contributors, potentially resulting in more focused discussions. However, the success of this feature depends on content creators’ effectiveness in engaging their audience and maintaining relevant updates.

Hayes indicated that live chats would begin appearing in the app “over the next few weeks,” although no specific launch date was provided, raising questions about the rollout timetable. The development reflects Threads’ strategy to evolve its platform in response to user needs and market competition.
