X’s messaging app, XChat, will soon allow users to send direct messages between X accounts as it is expected to be available for download on April 17.
XChat is a standalone messaging app, which is distinct from a previous IRC application. The app will support chatting and calling across devices and will feature end-to-end encryption, message editing and deletion, blocking screenshots, and disappearing messages that vanish within five minutes.
The app’s listing in the App Store confirms that users can pre-order XChat for iPhones and iPads to ensure automatic download upon release. Group chat functionality will permit up to 481 members.
Elon Musk first mentioned a new direct messaging feature in mid-2025, stating it would utilize a “whole new architecture” and provide encryption. Previously, Musk indicated that all X users would receive XChat by June of last year, reflecting a history of ambitious timelines.
X promises that XChat will not include ads or user tracking, aiming to provide a user-focused messaging platform. The launch of this app represents a shift from enhancing the existing DM feature to offering an entirely new communications experience.
Users seeking to download the app can currently pre-order it at the App Store. According to the listing, XChat will enhance direct messaging capabilities for X users.
