The US government has issued a grand jury subpoena to Reddit as part of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigation into a user accused of criticizing the agency. The Intercept reported that ICE is attempting to identify this Redditor by an April 14 deadline.

ICE has struggled to identify this individual for a month. The subpoena requires Reddit to provide the user’s name, address, phone number, and other personal information. The order was issued by federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C., following an unsuccessful attempt by ICE in Northern California.

Reddit’s headquarters are located in San Francisco, which falls under the jurisdiction of the federal court in Northern California. Attorneys for Reddit argue that the user’s posts and anonymity are protected under the First Amendment. They described ICE’s use of a grand jury subpoena as “a disturbing escalation.”

Reddit has not disclosed whether it will challenge the government’s request. However, the company emphasized that privacy is central to its operation and stated, “We do not voluntarily share information with any government, especially regarding users exercising their rights to criticize the government or plan a protest.”

This event may establish a concerning precedent regarding government requests for user information from social media platforms. The Department of Homeland Security has reportedly issued hundreds of subpoenas to various platforms, including Google, Discord, Meta, and Reddit, for user identification details.
