OpenAI has acquired TBPN — Technology Business Programming Network — marking its first acquisition of a media company. TBPN, hosted by former tech founders John Coogan and Jordi Hays, is a daily live talk show that airs on YouTube and X, focusing on tech, business, AI, and defense.
The acquisition signifies OpenAI’s strategy to enhance its media presence, leveraging TBPN’s established platform that has gained a significant following in Silicon Valley. TBPN is known for its candid discussions featuring industry leaders, including notable CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg and Satya Nadella, and is projected to generate over $30 million in revenue this year, according to The Wall Street Journal.
OpenAI plans to utilize the founders’ communication strategies beyond the show. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s head of AGI deployment, stated that TBPN will help convey the impact of AI technology on daily life. Simo emphasized that TBPN’s expertise is essential for a company seeking to communicate effectively in a non-standard industry landscape.
TBPN will maintain its editorial independence, continuing to manage its programming and guest selections, despite operating under OpenAI’s strategy team and reporting to Chris Lehane. Concerns have arisen regarding this arrangement, as Lehane has a controversial political background and has previously advised leaders on AI regulation strategies.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed confidence that TBPN would retain its critical perspective towards the company post-acquisition, asserting he does not expect a reduction in critical commentary. “I don’t expect them to go any easier on us,” Altman said.
Hays stated that the acquisition allows TBPN to transition from commentary to making a substantial impact on how AI technology is understood and disseminated globally. “Moving from commentary to real impact in how this technology is distributed and understood globally is incredibly important to us,” Hays said.
