Instagram has introduced an update allowing users to rearrange carousel posts after publication. This feature gives creators enhanced control over how their content is presented within the app, addressing a long-standing user request.

The update enables a “long press and drag” functionality for editing. Users can easily switch the order of images and videos within their carousel posts. However, they cannot add new media to an already published carousel. To include additional photos or videos, users must create a new carousel post.

Instagram highlighted that the re-ordering feature has been one of its most requested updates, with users often expressing frustration over the inability to make simple adjustments to post sequences. The company stated, “You have the flexibility to change the order of your carousel content at any time, ensuring your post always reflects your creative vision.”

This change is expected to be positively received by users and may encourage creators to experiment with their content display strategies. Carousel posts are particularly beneficial for users aiming to enhance engagement. Instagram Head Adam Mosseri noted in 2024 that carousel posts lead to higher engagement and reach by encouraging users to spend more time interacting with content. According to Buffer, research from March 2025 indicated that carousel posts achieve about 12% more engagement per post compared to other formats.

The introduction of this rearranging option may open up new strategies for how users present their content on Instagram and potentially increase overall performance on the platform. This adjustment in functionality underscores Instagram’s commitment to refining user experience based on community feedback.
